Our Story

The George & Dragon is a family-owned, independent country pub in Swallowfield, just outside Reading, and within easy reach of Wokingham, Shinfield and the surrounding Berkshire villages. Known for its seasonal British cooking and a strong line-up of award-winning local craft beers, it’s a proper countryside pub that’s easy to get to, but feels a world away from town. Owned by Siren Craft Brew, our beers come fresh from the brewery just a few miles away in Finchampstead, as well as a selection of other local guest ales and pub favourites.

Inside, the pub has a traditional, relaxed feel, with open fires, original brickwork, exposed beams and warm and welcoming spaces to settle into. Outside, it sits in the heart of the Berkshire countryside, surrounded by views, footpaths and countryside walks that start and finish at our renovated and expanded garden space. Dating back to the 17th century, The George & Dragon is a Grade II listed pub with a long and varied history. From its time as a coach house around the turn of the 20th century to its role as a much-loved village watering hole, the pub has always been part of local life. Over the past 20 years, a strong focus on food has earned it a reputation as one of the area’s best food-led country pubs, combining heritage, independence and quality cooking done properly.
