Country walks
Our customers love this 4 mile countryside walk, beginning and ending at the George & Dragon. We’ll have a pint ready for when you return!
Turn right on leaving the George & Dragon, then as the road bends right, turn left into Nutbean Lane. Continue down the lane, passing a small cemetery on your right.
Pass Nutbean Farm House on your left, then some houses on your right. Just after the last house, Wheelers Farm House, cross the footbridge over the ditch on your right, then follow the path along the left side of the field and down towards the river.
When you reach the river, turn left and follow the riverbank, ignoring a path forking left until you reach a footbridge over the river. Do not cross the river but continue along the riverbank, heading for a gate leading out onto a lane. Cross the lane then through the gate on the left and follow the waymarked path along the right edge of the field.
In the far corner of the field, cross a wooden footbridge and continue to a second footbridge and on to a metal kiss gate at the end of the next field. Follow the path across the next field to another metal gate into a lane. Jouldings Farm is on your right.
a) Short cut: Bear left and follow the lane. When it goes right, turn left on to a bridleway.
or
b) Pond detour: Cross the lane and bridge to pass Jouldings Farm and stables on your right. As you enter the next field take a sharp left and follow the hedges on your left to the first corner where you will cross a stile towards Cheriton Farm Fishery Pond. Head left around the pond to the stile in front of you, cross that and the next one straight ahead into the lane. Turn left on the lane and when the lane turns sharp left, turn right onto the bridleway.
Follow the bridleway between trees and thick hedges. Continue uphill through the trees till you come to a quiet country lane.
Turn left and continue along the lane, passing a footpath on your right. Just before a cottage on your right, bear right and follow the hedge lined path for about 50 yards until you come to an oak tree. At the oak tree turn right through a kiss gate and follow the waymarked path directly in front of you (ignoring the path off to the right) and climb the slight hill to the corner. Bear right and continue along the right hand side of the next field for about 70 yards, where you will reach a waymark post. Now turn left and head down the slope, keeping in line with some oak trees, with farm buildings over to your right.
At the bottom of the field continue straight between the trees and dense undergrowth until you come to a kiss gate leading onto a track, where you turn right. Keep going until you get to a small road. Follow the road to the left, round a left hand bend and a right turn.
At this junction, go straight across, along a sign-posted byway. Keep to the byway, disregarding a footpath on your right. When you reach the next road, turn right and when the road turns to the right, you bear left onto a waymarked path by the Farley Estate gate. Follow this track until it zig-zags through a hedge and continues in the same direction but with the hedge now on your right. At the end of this field take the left turn between hedges and follow this path until you reach the George & Dragon.
